Amazon sues InterDigital in UK
Sep 1, 2025——Today, the UK High Court updated case information, and Amazon has filed a lawsuit against InterDigital on August 29, 2025.
Amazon is represented by Hogan Lovells International, and the case number is HP-2025-000043.
Their last licensing agreement was signed in 2022, a fact documented in the Presentation of InterDigital’s 2024 Investor Day.
Furthermore, on October 3, 2022, InterDigital released an extremely brief statement on its official website—— “InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC), a mobile and video technology research and development company, today announced it has entered into a patent license agreement with a major technology company.”
If we rule out Apple and GM (not classified as a “major technology company”), the only party that can correspond to this statement is Amazon.
Given that Amazon has taken the initiative to file the lawsuit—especially in the UK High Court—it is likely pursuing two objectives: a FRAND royalty rate or an interim license.
The technologies under negotiation between the two sides may cover those used in Amazon’s consumer electronics products, such as Wi-Fi and video codec.
In report published by InterDigital in 2024, Amazon was mentioned and listed alongside Huawei as a party in ongoing negotiations, with the discussions focusing on tablets.
Thus, it can be inferred that Amazon’s lawsuit against InterDigital in the UK court is at least include claims related to royalty disputes over tablets.
Between June and July of this year (2025), Acer, Hisense, and ASUS successively filed lawsuits against Nokia in the UK High Court. One of the possible purposes behind these actions was to seek a court ruling on interim licenses.
Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that Amazon, facing the potential threat of an injunction, has taken a proactive defensive measure by being the first to sue InterDigital.
