Chinese POS device manufacturer challenges Nokia patent
On August 27, 2024, PRIP learned from the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) that PAX Computer Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., an affiliated company of PAX Global Technology Limited ("PAX", stock code: 00327. HK) listed in Hong Kong, China, has filed an invalid challenge to a patent ZL200980106337.8 of Nokia entitled "Soft Buffer Memory Configuration in a Communication System". The case is planned to hold an oral hearing in the CNIPA on September 4, 2024.
In fact, according to the records of the CNIPA, PAX filed an invalid request for Nokia patents in May this year. But it wasn't until yesterday that this news was made public.
Last month, Partik, who is responsible for Nokia's IoT licensing business, revealed on his LinkedIn that Nokia has reached a settlement with Verifone and signed a patent licensing agreement. Meanwhile, he also mentioned that Nokia has now obtained licenses from all Western point-of-sales payment device manufacturers. Meanwhile, Partik also complained about the slow progress in licensing negotiations with Chinese POS device manufacturers.
According to a report from Nilsen 2022, among the top ten POS manufacturers in the world, except for Worldline from France and Verifone from the United States, the other eight are all Chinese companies. PAX ranks second only to France's Worldline.
This may be Nokia once again falling into a patent dispute with Chinese companies after ending its patent dispute with OPPO.
