Ran Xu, who spent a decade at Xiaomi leading global patent licensing and later investor relations and capital markets, has left the Chinese giant to found Beijing Yuanshen Intellectual Property Co. Ltd., a boutique firm specializing in IP strategy and transaction services.
The new venture, operating as Rythan IP, aims to help innovation-driven companies convert technology into patent assets, commercial leverage and financing value, according to its website. Xu serves as legal representative of the company, incorporated in May 2026. Rythan IP’s tagline, “Rooted in technology. Deepened by value,” reflects its focus on turning technology into assets and assets into value. The firm has not publicly disclosed client names. Its website identifies patent licensing, patent monetization, portfolio strategy and cross-border IP transactions as its principal areas of practice.
Rythan IP’s core services draw on Xu’s decade-long track record at Xiaomi:
Patent Monetization. He led patent licensing and monetization transactions with a cumulative value in the multi-billion-dollar range. His work covered the full transaction lifecycle, including portfolio assessment, valuation, deal structuring, negotiation and execution, helping turn patent assets into revenue and long-term strategic value.
Patent Portfolio Planning. He built patent portfolios that served as both defensive shields and bargaining chips in high-value licensing deals, closely aligned with Xiaomi’s product roadmaps and global market needs.
Patent Transfer. He managed international patent purchases and sales, covering due diligence, valuation and transaction structuring.
Business Negotiation. Licensing negotiation was the core of Xu’s work at Xiaomi. He led critical patent negotiations within Xiaomi’s cost-disciplined hardware business model, including the company’s public commitment to keep the overall net profit margin of its hardware business at or below 5%.
Xu was one of Xiaomi’s most influential IP executives. Xu holds master’s and doctoral degrees in electronic engineering from the University of Bristol and previously worked at Cambridge Silicon Radio and Samsung Electronics. He joined the company in 2016 through its acquisition of Zhigu, an IP operating firm, and eventually rose to general manager of Corporate Business Development and IP Strategy, where he led global patent licensing and acquisitions. He later also headed Investor Relations and Capital Markets.
Xiaomi reorganized in late 2024, moving the Corporate Business Development and IP Strategy Department under group president William Lu. Xu shifted to the Group Strategy Department in January 2025 and took over Investor Relations and Capital Markets in May 2025.
Before Xu moved to other positions at Xiaomi, he had been a driving force behind the internationalization of Xiaomi’s IP. During his tenure, Xu encouraged Xiaomi’s IP team to participate actively in international IP forums. He and his colleagues articulated the perspectives of technology implementers, particularly regarding royalty levels and the commercial realities facing manufacturers. Their participation helped broaden international discussion of the concerns of Chinese technology companies.

What does that process look like when the valuable asset isn't a patent on one product feature, but a foundational architectural primitive expressed through a coordinated family across multiple commercial surfaces, some rights already mature and others still in prosecution? Is that in Rythan's lane?
