Huawei Takes Action Against HP to Advance Its Wi-Fi 6 Patent Licensing
Sep 17, 2025——Huawei filed a lawsuit against HP Inc. and several of its subsidiaries in Europe, alleging infringement of its European Patent EP3611989 entitled "Method and apparatus for transmitting wireless local area network information". This happend on August 19, 2025, with the case number ACT_34870/2025.
Huawei is represented by Dr. Tobias Johannes Hessel, Clifford Chance. HP is represented by Carlotta Mannes, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
This marks the fifth lawsuit initiated by Huawei since the establishment of the UPC over two years ago. The defendants in the previous four lawsuits were respectively Netgear, MediaTek, HMD, and Transsion.
The patents claimed by Huawei in these lawsuits, covering licensing demands related to technologies such as Wi-Fi 6, 4G/5G, and H.265. The lawsuit filed against HP this time is targeted at Wi-Fi 6 technology.
Huawei's first enforcement action at the UPC, established in 2023, was a patent lawsuit against Netgear. After years of global litigation, the two parties finally reached a settlement and signed a licensing agreement.
This is the second time Huawei has advanced its patent licensing for Wi-Fi 6 technology against a U.S. company through the UPC.
In fact, this is not the first time HP has been a defendant at the UPC. Prior to Huawei, Nokia and Dolby had already filed lawsuits against HP, also due to the failure to reach an agreement on patent licensing for codec technology between the respective parties.
Moreover, HP, acting as a patent holder, has also initiated enforcement actions against other companies (including Chinese companies) via the UPC.
In 2023, HP filed a lawsuit against LAMA France for infringing its printer patent, and by the end of 2024, it successfully obtained the first injunction issued by the UPC in France.
Subsequently, in 2025, HP further filed requests for interim measures against two Chinese enterprises: Shenzhen Oguan Electronics and Shenzhen Moan Technology.
The UPC has also disclosed two other cases involving Chinese companies. PRIP reported on these cases via WeChat yesterday.
One case involves the top two robotic vacuum cleaner manufacturers in China: Ecovacs has filed a lawsuit against Roborock at the UPC Munich LD. This marks the second lawsuit filed by Ecovacs against Roborock, following the one it initiated in the United States a week earlier.
On September 3, Ecovacs Robotics Co., Ltd. filed a lawsuit against Roborock (HK) Limited for infringement of European Patent EP3808512 , entitled "Robot localizing method, robot, and storage medium". The case number is ACT_36001/2025.
Ecovacs is represented by Gerd Jaekel, Jones Day. Roborock is represented by Thure Dr. Schubert, Vossius & Brinkhof.
