Qualcomm sues Transsion using patents from HP and Samsung
UPC has announced the third and fourth patents involved in the case
UPC has announced the third and fourth patents in the patent lawsuit between Qualcomm and Transsion.
On July 19, 2024, the UPC Munich (DE) Local Division accepted a patent infringement case (ACT-41607/2024) filed by Qualcomm against Transsion. The patent is EP2286325, titled "Card metaphor for activities in a computing device".
This patent involves early technology for smartphone operating systems and is a non-standard essential patent (non SEP). The original applicant was HP, which was later transferred to Qualcomm in 2015.
This Chinese patent of the same family as above European patent was used by Qualcomm to sue Apple.
In the 2017 "Qualcomm v Apple" case in China, Qualcomm had applied to the Chinese local court for an injunction against Apple's iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and other products using this patent.
After two invalid trials of this Chinese patent by the CNIPA, the reexamination panel upheld the validity of this patent. Apple was dissatisfied and continued to appeal to the Beijing Intellectual Property Court. The administrative first instance rejected Apple's appeal. Apple continues to appeal to the Supreme People's Court. After trial, the Supreme Court made a second instance ruling in July 2022, rejecting Apple's appeal and upholding the original judgment.
This case has also been selected as a typical case in the "Five Years and One Hundred Cases" of the Intellectual Property Division of the Supreme People's Court.
On July 18, 2024, the UPC Munich (DE) Local Division accepted a patent infringement case (ACT-39916/2024) filed by Qualcomm against Transsion. The patent is EP3454516, titled "Method and apparatus for multiplexing data and control information in wireless communication systems based on frequency division multiple access".
This patent involves technologies such as OFDM for communication transmission, and the original applicant was Samsung, which was later transferred to Qualcomm. This patent has no litigation records before.
The second patent is EP2803068, titled "Multiple coding mode signal classification".
The first patent is EP2232289, titled "Navigation receiver".
